Several years ago the town council made a commitment to expand Butterwick Road Cemetery to ensure Sedgefield continued to have a burial facility. Since that commitment was made a huge amount of work has taken place in terms of land purchase, project design and costings, submission of planning application, undertaking pre-commencement conditions which included groundwater testing and archaeological digs preparing detailed works specifications and performing a robust tendering exercise. A specialist contractor was commissioned to work with the town council throughout this project. All planning matters have now been approved and a contractor appointed. Work on-site will commence in early Spring 2025 and should take around 4 months to complete. A new access road is being created with turning circle for funeral vehicles, new paths will be made and the shelter in the existing area of the cemetery will be redesigned to create a walk-way feature linking the existing and new areas. This project will ensure the town has a burial facility for several generations to come.
We will continue to keep you updated on this project.
